It is a nine day festival and begins on the first day of the Hindu Luni-Solar calendar and falls in the month of March or April. According to Hindu calendar the first month is Chaitra and hence Navratri is also called Chaitra Navratri. The birth of Lord Rama also falls on the ninth day of the Navratri celebrations and hence the ninth day of Navratri is also known as the Rama Navami.

The festival is celebrated with different names in different parts of India, in Maharashtra it starts with Gudi Padwa and in Andhra Pradesh it starts with Ugadi. Some important fairs in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are organized during this period. Another important event in Punjab and Haryana is the worshipping of little girls or Kanya Puja.

The festival of Vasant Navratri is at its best in Northern India. The festival is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga. The first three days of Navratri are dedicated to Durga, the next three days to Goddess Laxmi and the last three days to Goddess Saraswati. The rituals of Navratri include fasting for nine days and performing Kanya Puja.

Devotees worship nine incarnations of goddess Durga for nine days to get the blessings of Maa Durga.
